The Centennial Flame was lit by Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson just after midnight on January 1, 1967, to celebrate 100 years of Canadian confederation. The shields from the coats of arms of ten Canadian provinces and two territories are found around the fountain (the third territory - Nunvat is not represented).
